Unlike some medical teachers whose lecturers remained cut and dried, he was forever revising his views as his experience grew. Once seeing his students taking notes of every word, he cautioned them wagging his finger, ‘Better not write down that observation; for very likely I shall think differently next year.’

His influence as a teacher was as great as his own work in the field of pathology and surgery. His brilliant pupil was Edward Jenner who once expressed he thought he could prevent by vaccination. ‘Don’t think,’ Hunter advised, ’Try it , be patient, be accurate. His pupil heeded the advice apparently to discover the small pox vaccine.( ack:Robert Silverberg)
