A Residence at Papamoa Beach, New Zealand

In 1989 I visited New Zealand on account of a design project. The residence for a doctor facing the beach sandwiched between various shops was a challenging one. There was mandatory height restriction since it was under the earthquake zone. The property was 27′-0″ wide and 85 feet deep. The design brief was to accommodate three bedrooms above the nursing clinic of the client.
Since no opening were possible on the sides I had to rely on the single light shaft around which I arranged the work area on one level and the bed rooms at the uppermost floor with en suite. By using white and off-white for the walls I could create a well lit interior at every level.
I also made use of a mezzanine floor from which one could have unrestricted view of the beach.(second photo)
Because of the narrow width of the property I carved a stair case on one end and at the landing a door to reach the terrace with a bed room facing it.
