Mr. Edward Snowden is traveling by commercial air while the USA want him grounded and delivered to them. Can’t a Giant get his wish?June 23.

The USA have their reasons while Mr. Snowden his reasons for what he did. Alas there isn’t an earthly court where they can establish truth.

Till such time truth can be revealed and understood by all, suffering of each is not for own self but also for sins of others.

Prisons, till Truth is enshrined in the land as real, are for the dispossessed, weak, poor and needy. The biggest rogues are let free. Because they know how to manipulate the system to their advantage.

When society made prisons it made its burden of guilt also more harsh.

What an humbling exercise to find you have practically none when you need help? President Obama is in a fix.You may judge how effective has been the US foreign policy from this.

Pres.Obama has been reaching out but his long arm, both Secretaries of State, seem to have drawn blank. It is not for want of trying but the perception others have of real intentions of the US. Is it trying to create conditions for peace and International understanding? Each nation will have its own opinion.

Diplomacy is not in not simply picking chestnuts from fire but controlling the fire till chestnuts are got out.In post-Cold War the US policy was all along to take opposite view of Russia (the war in Syria) Why should Russia oblige USA over Snowden? Now Russia takes this opportunity to deny cooperating with the US.Those who need friends must show themselves friendly that applies both in personal and national relationships. No exception to it.

Snowden affair seems to get murkier with each day. He is now like Jonah swallowed by an ideological whale. Where it will spit him out?

June. 26

Snowden still at airport, Ecuador asylum decision could take months. Reason is simple. Ecuador has to think of trade with the US.

Ecuador has to think of its flowers, vegetables and the Yankee dollah funds its economy. So Snowden has to cool his heels longer.

Idealism is fine but cost prohibitive; Ecuador knows by now Marxism may be polished by rhetoric but it is money that fills their belly.

If Politics of nations runs on hard realities of dollars and cents individuals are not. So much is obvious.

Whoever first got nation concept accepted as ‘politics of the future’ is the one who sold himself. He might have called himself a realist.Time judges how real he was.

No nation has learned to tame an individual simply because nation is a creature of all individuals where no democracy in its ideal state can exist.Nations at best try to cater to the good of majority which is not good enough for those who happen to be left out.

In the post WWII Karl Fuchs was among a small group of intellectuals who objected the role of USA having total control of nuclear arms. He turned a spy. Compare the fate Rosenberg couple in the 50s and AQ Khan who cut an pasted nuclear secrets and sold through internet.

Was justice served equally to those who leaked nuclear secret of the west to other nations? Nations blunder as much as individuals.
Modern Age is better served by the likes of Orwell,Thoreau who are best representative of the Outsiders but well tuned to speak truth.
On what motives Edward Snowden leaked sensitive information we may not really know. Was he bent on mischief or out of idealism? Everyone shall have an opinion to which I would rather not get into. Lesson that L’affaire Snowden teaches us that nations tribes, secular, theocratic for that matter any system run by man or body of men, is an exercise in futility. Immoral it shall be and we need to ask how far we may rid us off the sheer fools, mullahs devoid of common sense or how human nature works, from tampering it.For example see the state of Egypt in post Mubarak period. So much blood of ordinary citizens was shed for what, so some religious nut can run the country from bad to worse? Or what about Pakistan?

From a toddler to a doddering fool you realize all that you did as a matter of duty was expected of you. So no thanks mate.
All that you did as time and inclination permitted gave you some satisfaction. No comments mate. You did your thing.
When you are past deeds sans teeth, sans joy sans friends all that come to haunt you is not what you could do but what you have left undone or is too late to mend. I don’t know what is all this bother about.
This is where you and your society part company. They haven’t a clue what makes what you are.

CLEVELAND – A contractor who found $182,000 in Depression-era currency hidden in a bathroom wall has ended up with only a few thousand dollars, but he feels some vindication.

The windfall discovery amounted to little more than grief for contractor Bob Kitts, who couldn’t agree on how to split the money with homeowner Amanda Reece.

It didn’t help Reece much, either. She testified in a deposition that she was considering bankruptcy and that a bank recently foreclosed on one of her properties.

And 21 descendants of Patrick Dunne — the wealthy businessman who stashed the money that was minted in a time of bank collapses and joblessness — will each get a mere fraction of the find.

“If these two individuals had sat down and resolved their disputes and divided the money, the heirs would have had no knowledge of it,” said attorney Gid Marcinkevicius, who represents the Dunne estate. “Because they were not able to sit down and divide it in a rational way, they both lost.”

moral of the story: Troubles shared is trouble halved. But money whichever way one may divide it still takes skin off you. Knowing that the money rightfully belongs to the Dunne estate ought to weigh in one’s conscience. Right?

A man went to New York in search of work. His farm had been devastated which was not something special since his once fertile land had been turned into a dustbowl. Mother Nature had dealt him a severe blow; and his community to which he, like his fathers before him had belonged was of no help. The President of the local bank and the directors had failed him in his moment of distress. Did they not force him to mortgage his lands for updating his farm equipments? Did they not deceive him by drawing a rosy picture of what he stood to gain and suggested easy terms? When things went wrong they had quickly dropped him and forced him out. He had much to gripe about.

Now in New York he was on his own. He joined a gang since he had declared war on society. But when he was asked by the gang leader to kill some one, he demured. “ That will make me a murderer.” The gang leader laughed and said,” But you have declared war. Didn’t you?” He would not let him join them without blood on his hands.

He asked for time.

The same night he made his escape since he knew he would have no other choices left but to go down killing or some other crime. He wanted to choose his own course with which he could live in good conscience. What choices we make create new pathways while closing so many. Consequently for me Either Or is a way of discovering my essential self. Let the world go on its way and I shall go my way.

As the song,’I did it my way,’ truth of action is to leave my signature in the scheme of things. It shall make sense if not today sometime in eternity.

We shall see a nation is not so much as good in setting any lasting value either in morality or in public good as an individual. The rise of Mafia is a  case in point.
The Mafia was originally comprised of a few families who migrated to the USA from Italy. Soon they established contacts in their adopted homeland and also gained political strength. They could pull strings and get what they wanted. In the era of gilded age money opened doors. So they prospered and  drew strength from the mass exodus of poor Italians to the USA at the turn of the 20th century.  The poor immigrants hardly spoke English and didn’t possess the necessary social skills either. They had to compete with the Irish community that had already established in Chicago. Besides Police force was filled with members from the Irish community. Mafia offered the newcomers their protection and found them jobs a service that, of course, came with a price tag.
After Mussolini came to power in Italy in the late 1922 he muzzled in the Mafia. In the USA Thomas E.Dewy in his role of District Attorney succeeded in sending the powerful Mafia boss ‘Lucky‘ Luciano to jail but the WW II intervened.
At a time Nazi Germany had sent their U-boats to create havoc on the Atlantic shipping lane Mafia secretly succeeded in scuttling Normandy berthed off the NY harbor. U.S government asked Navy intelligence to cooperate with the Mafia since labor unions backed by them effectively controlled the ports. Before the Allied invasion of Sicily the U.S government struck a deal with the mafia chief. As part of the deal ‘Lucky’ Luciano was released. Italy lost the war that proved as a shot in arm to the fortunes of Mafia.
Edgar J. Hoover was the FBI chief from 1920 for a period of 50 years and Mafia as reports go, was blackmailing him. His sexual predilections are not of interest as how much he contributed to the phenomenal growth of Mafia during his tenure as the head of FBI. In 1957 at Palermo a few clan chiefs including ‘Lucky’ Luciano, Joseph Bonnano and others held a meeting where an important decision was taken: Mafia would henceforth deal in heroin. It was a very lucrative business. As a result of that meeting shortly thereafter heroin was flooding into the streets of USA.

If anyone is interested to know the figures of hard drug users before 1957 and after one only need to go through the figures that are in public domain.

Moral of this narrative is that nations preach moral values but statecraft is often in breaking them than scrupulously keeping their nose  and hands clean. No nation has ever achieved the perfection it so vociferously trumpets from rooftops. Even under the most tyrannical regimes like Third Reich or the Soviet empire (under Stalin) rules have been broken with impunity. Why? The reason is simple: a nation is run by men. If a man in a very sensitive or vital point for example J. Edgar  Hoover or Lavrenti Beria, the secret police chief, NKVD (a notorious pedophile) can be influenced, the entire chain of command is at risk. Then policy makers need to ensure that they are reelected ; so they  often take shortcuts for short term remedies than sticking to any moral principles.

Now the question is: is the conscience of an individual( and his freedom to exercise his judgment) of paramount importance or that of a nation?

Continued from my previous post ‘Is God Out There?’

Time is of a vast scale and beyond our clear understanding. Nevertheless we walk the line or mark time here on the earth. Why would we then correct ourselves of mistakes we perceive them as unworthy of us if it were not so? Anyone who has some measure of self-esteem and respect for one’s true worth will strive to live in an exemplary manner. ‘When can I do better nothing less would suffice’. Time for us on the earth is to take us a notch higher day after day in moral terms as well as in our knowledge . Our mortal nature recognizes truth of nature ; but it is in context of Truth. We have a physical body but  we also have a soul-our essence: our soul is what we hold as Truth transcribed into human terms. Conscience is merely our recognition of  it.

St. Augustine led a dissolute life and he changed when he was convicted of such a life unworthy of him. Why would he want to do that when time is distorted for all? Yes we are finite beings and time runs for us in such a manner we tend to be distracted by superficials than by what is of our essence. For St. Augustine such a realization came from a chance hearing of verses from the Scriptures. His mother’s prayers that he would have heard often and the maternal concern for his soul resonated at the appropriate time to effect a change of ways.
Such changes work for so many in so many ways. I shall illustrate in another post how Albert Schweitzer found his way out.
Dr. Albert Schweitzer, St. Francis, Buddha and Gandhi for example learned to straighten out time from distorting their life’s work.
