Mr. Edward Snowden is traveling by commercial air while the USA want him grounded and delivered to them. Can’t a Giant get his wish?June 23.

The USA have their reasons while Mr. Snowden his reasons for what he did. Alas there isn’t an earthly court where they can establish truth.

Till such time truth can be revealed and understood by all, suffering of each is not for own self but also for sins of others.

Prisons, till Truth is enshrined in the land as real, are for the dispossessed, weak, poor and needy. The biggest rogues are let free. Because they know how to manipulate the system to their advantage.

When society made prisons it made its burden of guilt also more harsh.

What an humbling exercise to find you have practically none when you need help? President Obama is in a fix.You may judge how effective has been the US foreign policy from this.

Pres.Obama has been reaching out but his long arm, both Secretaries of State, seem to have drawn blank. It is not for want of trying but the perception others have of real intentions of the US. Is it trying to create conditions for peace and International understanding? Each nation will have its own opinion.

Diplomacy is not in not simply picking chestnuts from fire but controlling the fire till chestnuts are got out.In post-Cold War the US policy was all along to take opposite view of Russia (the war in Syria) Why should Russia oblige USA over Snowden? Now Russia takes this opportunity to deny cooperating with the US.Those who need friends must show themselves friendly that applies both in personal and national relationships. No exception to it.

Snowden affair seems to get murkier with each day. He is now like Jonah swallowed by an ideological whale. Where it will spit him out?

June. 26

Snowden still at airport, Ecuador asylum decision could take months. Reason is simple. Ecuador has to think of trade with the US.

Ecuador has to think of its flowers, vegetables and the Yankee dollah funds its economy. So Snowden has to cool his heels longer.

Idealism is fine but cost prohibitive; Ecuador knows by now Marxism may be polished by rhetoric but it is money that fills their belly.

If Politics of nations runs on hard realities of dollars and cents individuals are not. So much is obvious.

Whoever first got nation concept accepted as ‘politics of the future’ is the one who sold himself. He might have called himself a realist.Time judges how real he was.

No nation has learned to tame an individual simply because nation is a creature of all individuals where no democracy in its ideal state can exist.Nations at best try to cater to the good of majority which is not good enough for those who happen to be left out.

In the post WWII Karl Fuchs was among a small group of intellectuals who objected the role of USA having total control of nuclear arms. He turned a spy. Compare the fate Rosenberg couple in the 50s and AQ Khan who cut an pasted nuclear secrets and sold through internet.

Was justice served equally to those who leaked nuclear secret of the west to other nations? Nations blunder as much as individuals.
Modern Age is better served by the likes of Orwell,Thoreau who are best representative of the Outsiders but well tuned to speak truth.
On what motives Edward Snowden leaked sensitive information we may not really know. Was he bent on mischief or out of idealism? Everyone shall have an opinion to which I would rather not get into. Lesson that L’affaire Snowden teaches us that nations tribes, secular, theocratic for that matter any system run by man or body of men, is an exercise in futility. Immoral it shall be and we need to ask how far we may rid us off the sheer fools, mullahs devoid of common sense or how human nature works, from tampering it.For example see the state of Egypt in post Mubarak period. So much blood of ordinary citizens was shed for what, so some religious nut can run the country from bad to worse? Or what about Pakistan?

These are observations that I as an old man have concluded as valid. Equally valid observations anyone may make and it need not agree point by point with mine. After all my life experience is not of another. Think how static and boring this world would be had it been a single standard? There would be no give and take and only a one way street. Rule of the Old fogey on the basis of life experience counted in years. No I shall stick to mine.

Life is non-dimensional where your experience outs you -it gives away where you are going and you are placed in time and place by others. My father despaired that I have totally wasted my life while I disagreed with his conclusion. Only I can, looking back see what despaired my father was based on his experience, that was within a set of rules. While I can see what were my failures, I mean in his eyes, could be turned around to advantage. He was appalled by my passion for art, literature, music etc and he rightly concluded it impeded me in my pursuit of my carer. My career ended at the age of retirement while all the strengths I invested in my art and intellect are still in full flow and each day I am raring to go. Of course this too shall pass.
I was never a joiner. While politics interested me in a way the extent people could behave downright foolish and believe in promises of some blackguards who in the name of public service have chosen to use them for their own purposes. Some of these rogues have gone from strength to strength and did all to wreck their country. Yet I have seen them having the audacity to appear in public asking for votes and getting away with it. Even in liberal and affluent nations man on the street is naive yet work of their hands keep the country from going under; these hard-working citizenry working against great many hardships hold the nation going. What makes them still stand ? They have hopes. Hope that these politicians are steadily chipping away. I understand that it is still as strong as ever. Whether in India or in the US politics as played will remain lopsided but shall not wreck it. Isn’t it a mystery? Mystery of life.
Then why do we need the politicians? Simply because hope needs a heart that will keep on beating even if the head is somewhat rotten. Like the immune system the ability of the body to survive the perils of one part of the body is much more than sum of the parts.
Thank God I don’t have to rebuild society to which my claim has been at its best a nodding acquaintance. Had I involved too much into it under a mistaken notion my will or efforts would have made the difference, I would have thrown away the better part of my life. By inclination and disposition I was almost a recluse I have kept my own counsel at the same time devoting my energies I had to spare, on a few friends. That suited me then while now love of a woman and making it bear fruits on day to day basis is fine with me.

Man is a social animal and as such thrust of his progress can be measured in terms of the society, created by him.
If it is created measure of his success can also be determined in how sociable he has become. In the evolution of our ape-ancestors to the modern man we hold no distinction between Australopithecines, Homo erectus (which inhabited Asia, Africa, and Europe) and Neanderthals (either Homo neanderthalensis or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) (which inhabited Europe and Asia). We carry however in our genome something of those groups that have died out. We are humans and our achievements are part of our common experience. In short despite of evolutionary twists and turns of our origins we bear the bequest of those who did not make it. Family beginnings of modern man go far back as 400,000 and 250,000 years ago. In terms of biology we humans do not demonstrate in the least any particular divine favor that a Christian, Jew or a Muslim claim as special for himself.
But looking at our social structure we see we are fragmented in the way we have chosen to show our identity in terms of our race, religion and economic status. We went about creating a family of man and became a creature of our own conceit. Perhaps this paradox is ever in our consciousness and that would explain the perennial popularity of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein.
We choose the society that we can relate to and not other way around. In accommodating members with various life experiences and interacting with them we infuse vitality into it. We broaden our horizons as a result. Nature has divised ways which would seem to follow this formula: like repels like; and opposites attract. History is replete with instances where societal collapse owed to the failure in heeding Nature’s warning. Inbreeding of Pharaohs in Egypt sowed their eventual demise and one of the serious consequences of Islam lay in the cultural stagnation. Dar-ul Islam or Global Islam means that all nations would be ruled under an Islamic theocracy, which is simply a national government set up under the rule of Allah’s divine sanction as expressed in the Qur’an and Shari’ah law. It did not happen. Historically Muslims failed to make their initial successes in world conquests to something permanent or significant. Mongol Invasion of the 13th century and Black Death had curtailed their mission. In their falling back to their old ideas a way of life they were comfortable they denied further growth. Compare between the period of Ottoman Empire at the height of its glory during the reign of Suleiman the magnificent, and the decades prior to the WWI (when it was called the Sick Man of Europe) is a sad commentary of a society that had run of ideas. It ceased to grow.

Islam as a religion can be authoritatively dated and the flight of Mohammed is a historical date. Let us consider Islamic tradition relates Prophet Muhammad in 610, when he was 40 years old first heard the voice of the angel Gabriel, who recited to him the word of God, today written down in the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an, meaning “recitation.”
It is significant that Muslims believe that what Gabriel told Muhammad came directly from God;by the same token the Jews believe the promise of Israel was given by God to Patriarch Abraham indicating the extent of their promised land.
One cannot be true and the other false.
Islam says that the message was similar to those received by the early Hebrew prophets: that God is one, he is all-powerful, he is the creator of the universe, and that there will be a Judgment Day when those who have carried out God’s commands will enjoy paradise in heaven, and those who have not will be condemned to hell. As we have seen, these ideas were also part of the Zoroastrian religion. When certain ideas are common experience of man there must be something to it. But in the way these ideas are coined and given value we need to be clear that such value system is man-made and as currency holds limited use. The correspondence principle states that if one man’s revelation is accepted as true on the same scale every belief must be accepted as true.

Man who dreams the impossible is everywhere persecuted. It is not the dream but how that dream is realized for the betterment of society is the main point. Prophet Mohammed fled to Medina and his dream was put into reality by his followers. How one would make a case for the Mormon sect, which was also founded on a spiritual experience?
This sect was founded in 1830. The Mormon pioneers were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as Latter-day Saints, who migrated across the United States from the Midwest to the Salt Lake Valley in what is today the U.S. state of Utah. At the time of the planning of the exodus in 1846, the territory was owned by the Republic of Mexico, which soon after went to war with the United States over the annexation of Texas.

The journey was taken by about 70,000 people beginning with advanced parties sent out by church fathers in March 1846 after the assassination of Mormon founder Joseph Smith made it clear the faith could not remain in Nauvoo, Illinois — which the church had recently purchased, improved, renamed and developed because of the Missouri Mormon War setting off the Illinois Mormon War. The well-organized wagon train migration began in earnest in April 1847, and the period (including the flight from Missouri in 1838 to Nauvoo) known as the Mormon Exodus is, by convention among social scientists, assumed to have ended with the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Whether preposterous or wholesome values that a religion may contain man is ready to forsake all for his liberty of conscience. It is the golden key which opens the door to the promised land.
How can Moslems expect others to accept their religion as perfect when they themselves did not keep the promise? History of mankind shall be strewn with the conflict of liberty of conscience and pursuit of pleasure whatever the term ‘pleasure’ may mean. History is not concerned with motives or dreams of man but how their dreams were realized. When the children of Islam fell back from the shared experience of the rest of the world they nullified even what was within their reach to be at the vanguard of progress.
Dreams of a prophet like Joseph Smith or Brigham Young will please many but for me to accept these under coercion would be veritable nightmare. (To be continued)
Parts of this essay was taken from my book Principles of History. B

It was Adolf Hitler who once posed the question: “What is life?” He himself answered it thus:”Life is the nation. The individual is the nation. The individual must die anyway. Beyond the life of the individual is the Nation.”( Shirer:The Rise and fall of the Third Reich. p.933) I owe this article to Wm. Shirer’s excellent analysis of the Collapse of the Third Republic.
Individuals make up the nation and a House divided itself cannot last. So individuals do matter. Which is more important? a chicken or the egg? Or the city or a citizen? There is nothing that can stand by itself as far as anything that is organized to serve a purpose. Man makes the city and is in turn changed by it. One need only visit a city like New York to see the frenetic pace that keeps her denizens moving about. Whereas if I were to set the same pace in a place like Perar, a village in the Hills, Tamil Nadu, India I would be viewed by the locals as one wanting in intelligence. Man exudes a certain energy level, call it his intrinsic worth and when it connected with another it raises him to an altogether level. One only needs to watch a young man trying to interest a young woman. Seen how their making out hits an altogether new patch when another young man appears in the scene? In short synergy of an individual is infectious and it makes all provide their own and lo, the rules of the game will be changed once and for all. A New Yorker if he were to go back to his roots say a hick town will he not feel out of place? He has given his energy for a common purpose and has benefited from the common pool so much that he is changed forever.
The Nation is set up by so many individuals who may be migrant workers, citizens and ethnic groups absorbed into the mainstream for the development, maintenance and support of the Nation. No matter a Nation is doomed in the long run if these bodies of individuals are divided and pressed down by laws that are aimed to protect a a particular group.

Monk Me-Alone turned his back on society, his folks and neighbours. He sat on a patch of barren land said,”I shall live here alone and live frugally so I do not owe anything to anyone”. He lived under a scorching sun and suffered the rain so much so some passersby thought he was indeed a divine fool to live so. They reported the matter to many others who were all waiting for something to distract them.

They exulted that they had a miracle in their midst. Instantly they adopted him and touted of the miracle man in their midst. Soon there were tourists cartloads who visited him and shops naturally sprang up to cater to the needs of the pilgrims.

The Monk Me-Alone said,”Bah!” He did not care an onion for those who made money at his expense. Suddenly a spring sprang up right before the spot where he sat. King of the Northern Kingdom  while passing that way heard of the miracle and asked if there could be a reasonable explanation for it. The villagers in one accord attributed the springs to the presence of the monk. The king and his party immediately called on the monk and said,” O Holy Monk, our kingdom is reeling under a severe drought and not a drop to be had. I have come in order to solve the sorry plight of my subjects.” The monk did not reply. The King said in the end,” You have diverted all the water that was meant for my people. Either you send it back to us or we take you as our prisoner till you solve our problem.”

Monk Me-Alone couldn’t answer. He had to go along with some whom he had nothing to do.(c)
