In India’s northeast, for instance, Hindutva plays well because of public anxiety about illegal migration of Muslims from Bangladesh. With the recent improvement of Indo-Pak relations, he added, Hindu nationalism is now less resonant in New Delhi, but that could change with another cross-border terrorist attack, for instance on the Indian Parliament.” Arun Jaitley’s remarks were made in 2005.
This reminds me of another time and another place. In the fall of 1922 Hitler was beginning to interest the Allies and at the suggestion of the American ambassador one Capt. Truman Smith, a Yale graduate, a West-Pointer was sent to report. The assistant military attaché in Berlin went over to Munich and to assess NSDAP’s strength and potentialities. Max-Erwin, a liberal newspaper editor, who had considerable influence on Hitler assured Capt.Smith that party’s anti-semitism was ‘purely for propaganda.’ On looking back we know how the Allies were deceived in accepting the words of Nazi Party at face value.( Ack: Adolf Hitler by John Toland-p.172/Ballantine Books NY/1977)
Politics is not played by gentlemen, but by ravening wolves whether in brown or orange cloak-more so in the case of a party that appeals to man’s base passions.
