UP IN THE GALLERY

If some frail tubercular lady circus rider were to be driven in circles around and around the arena for months and months without interruption in front of a tireless public on a swaying horse by a merciless whip-wielding master of ceremonies, spinning on the horse, throwing kisses and swaying at the waist, and if this performance, amid the incessant roar of the orchestra and the ventilators, were to continue into the ever-expanding, gray future, accompanied by applause, which died down and then swelled up again, from hands which were really steam hammers, perhaps then a young visitor to the gallery might rush down the long staircase through all the levels, burst into the ring, and cry “Stop!” through the fanfares of the constantly adjusting orchestra.

But since things are not like that—since a beautiful lady, in white and red, flies in through curtains which proud men in livery open in front of her, since the director, with the devotion of an animal, seeks her eyes, breathes in her direction, and, as a precaution, lifts her up on the dapple-gray horse, as if she were his granddaughter, the one he loved more than anything else, as she starts a dangerous journey, but he cannot decide to give the signal with his whip and finally, controlling himself, gives it a crack, runs right beside the horse with his mouth open, follows the rider’s leaps with a sharp gaze, hardly capable of comprehending her skill, tries to warn her by calling out in English, furiously castigating the grooms holding hoops, telling them to pay the most scrupulous attention, and begs the orchestra, with upraised arms, to be quiet before the great somersault, finally lifts the small woman down from the trembling horse, kisses her on both cheeks, and considers no public tribute adequate, while she herself, supported by him, high on the tips of her toes, with dust swirling around her, arms outstretched and little head thrown back, wants to share her luck with the entire circus—since this is how things are, the visitor to the gallery puts his face on the railing and, sinking into the final march as if into a difficult dream, weeps, without realizing it.

One night I jumped from my sleep for a thought had struck me. I woke up my wife of 40 years and asked,” With millions of migrant passing through our fields does anyone think of the plague that are coming into our midst?” Silence. My worry had become her worry now while I rattled of the names, ebola, malaria, rotavirus Zika and the whole flotilla of unseen enemy gathering momentum. My wife in the end stopped me to say,”You are foaming at the mouth, dear.” In the end I said, tomorrow I shall visit our city fathers. We cannot rest till we heard from them direct.”

Next morning I went to the city hall. Surprise oh surprise, the whole city hall  was now housed in a new edifice all chrome and glass. “You get what you see” the sign at the entrance did not exactly gladden my heart any more than the cleaning lady down on her knees and she said without even looking up, “there is none in”. I did not take that for an answer. I was already feeling nameless pains from nameless pandemic virus all going on at once. The offices were fully automated, and a state-of- the art robot sitting behind a table. There was a notice: “Ask me.”

I asked what was uppermost in my mind. “Ask me another.” the robot replied. I persisted till  the robot replied for twentieth time the same reply in the same placid tone.

Before I go berserk I thought it better to flee. I fled and the cleaning lady had not moved an inch where I left behind last time. I stopped squarely before her and barked, “You saw me last time didn’t you?” No response. I bent down and spat out “Answer me.” In the end she said askance,”I only take order from my boss.”

“You mean the robot inside?” She mumbled. I persisted since I saw a drop of tear welling on her left eye. “At least she is a daughter of Eve.’I asked,”From who does the robot take orders?”

She said, “From  the man upstairs.” I ran  before I could lose my marbles.

Symbols

Symbols are the means adopted by the Spirit to reconcile variable time scales in the Bible. Both Time and earth time of man must reconcile. Whosoever believes in the death and resurrection of the Son is of an altogether different time scale. So the Spirit has taken both narratives from the Father-Son relationship and held as one by means of symbols.

So what do we mean by a symbol? An easily recognizable object or thing is lifted from its natural context to underpin nature of God or man. Thus to indicate long suffering nature and goodness of God the Spirit uses rain as a symbol. By same token when God withholds rain it manifests divine disfavor. Lamb is another. When Jesus exhorts his followers to be perfect he speaks how He makes the sun rise on the good and evil alike. Grass and lilies of the field are also examples. In short each material object holds an ancillary spiritual significance. Manna is a symbol for bread from heaven and also specifically refers to the body of Christ Jesus broken for our salvation.

Let us consider our own body with that of the Son of man. It is the image of the earthy. In the Common Prayer when we recite ‘ashes to ashes and dust to dust’ during the funeral service we are recalling the natural end of our body. Before Jesus Christ would taste death for everyone in his body God had prepared one for him. It existed in the Will before the foundations of the world began. It was but a symbol, indicating the eternal aspect of his Will. The Lamb slain was the emblem as the brazen serpent in the wilderness foreshadowing the vicarious death of God the Son. The body with which the Son of man came to the world was natural that we read that he experienced hunger and thirst as every other. God had willed God the Son would perfect his Will in his body but the symbol would never alter. It is a symbol applying to us and for eternity. Therein we trace what God had determined concerning us through the Son (Ro.8:29)”.

For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God (Col.3:3). This is how we consider our body as having died to the world and its corruption. The body shall die once but on a symbolic plane it shall continue as ever because it is hid with Christ in God. In order to make a distinction between the two we shall consider the body of our spiritual life that oversees our newness of life is our inner man.

“Truth is the last frontier that is left for science to reach; but what is it?”

Science has answered great many but Truth in absolute sense remains still elusive. It is not for want of trying.  Even though scientists have managed to quantify how much dark matter lurks in distant galaxies, astronomers have been hard-pressed to figure out how much of the mysterious stuff lies within our own. Measuring anything is hard when you’re inside of it,” As the Astrophysicist James Bullock said, “It’s kind of like trying to figure out what kind of house you live in without ever leaving your house.”

Is man really keen to know the truth?

“Truth sounds good but money in pocket is better,” seems to me how man with his attention-deficit set progress on the move. We live in the Anthropocene Age: our blue planet as a result has become a plastic planet. Global warming and devastating  hurricanes hitting one after the other reveal the planet earth in distress. Yet do we face the truth of our own mismanagement? As to our belief systems the  less said is the better. What we need ask is : how big is mind and to what it is fixed?  Now You Know: mind and matter continues what science can do and what it cannot. Aim of the author is to present before the reader a fair idea of the Big Picture in 364 entries.

Now You Know: man and nature  is also available.

My second volume is available through Amazon.
