Nothing but trouble comes out of these four:

Making use of friends. Remember the down fall of Choi Soon-sil who was a close confidante of the former South Korean President. She has been sentenced for corruption. Similarly the case of Sashikala in the state of Tamil Nadu. She was so close with Jayalalitha, as close and deep as a tape worm in her bowels. Where is she now? Once the Chief Minister died her fate was sealed. So is everyone who is eager to be seen in company of the rich and famous.

Making friends with others with ulterior motives, is like a book that has lost its cover. Soon incessant demands one makes for their time, and peddling influence using their names blunts his/her moral fibre. A dog eared book with many pages missing is only fit for trashcan.

Loving things above people makes you dependent on a worse taskmaster who will only leave you bound after having gnawed off your heart ,soul and the very music of your life. Late Helmut Kohl the architect of an unified Germany was under the cloud. Since dead we shall not discuss his corruption as leader of men. Now a toxic family feud follows him to his grave. Kohl may turn in his grave what price he paid for such a discord?

Things also mean surface appearances: loving a woman for her bloom of youth and not taking care to invest your time to make her bask in your love unfeigned, shall leave a bitter taste when years take a toll of both. Duke of Wellington sought the hand of his Kitty when his name was yet to be heard. When he finally married her the shock was great for him they lived unhappily as ever. What price is glory of man who cannot find warmth around his hearth?

Inability to appreciate your own gifts every day of your life, and put them to use in howsoever much narrow turf you are provided with, amounts to suicide.

Let me first take up the Euler’s theorem or Euler’s Identity. It is an equation as neat as Einstein’s e=mc2 and in the words of Prof. David Percy of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, it was “a real classic and you can do no better than that … It is simple to look at and yet incredibly profound, it comprises the five most important mathematical constants.”

Euler’s Identity is written simply as: e + 1 = 0

The five constants are:

  • The number 0.
  • The number 1.
  • The number π, an irrational number (with unending digits) that is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is approximately 3.14159…
  • The number e, also an irrational number as π . It is approximately 2.71828….

But the weirdest thing about Euler’s formula—given that it relies on imaginary numbers—is that it’s so immensely useful in the real world. By translating one type of motion into another this equation has application in real world. π and e are deeply related, but in a very weird way, as adventures of Alice after falling through the rabbit hole.

Such irrational events that Alice experienced are in a dimension perpendicular to the world of real things—a place measured in units of i. The square root of –1, which of course doesn’t exist. Mathematicians call it an imaginary number.

Because Alice shows effects from obeying instructions ‘Drink me or Eat me’ down there is in literal sense while in real world what one faces is no less embarrassing as losing face or feeling small. In short our existence is the axis around which both irrational and real world make their claims on us, even if it is only limited to a nightmare. This equation is all pervasive in human affairs where an element of irrationality is in-built.

We cannot multiply a number by itself to produce a negative number anymore than we can repeat a dream by our will, The letter i is therefore used as a sort of stand-in to mark places where this was done.

The Queen of Hearts in the Lewis Carroll’s story might order about but Alice holds the ultimate authority and when she asserts it shows what is wrong with the authority of the Queen. She is only a number in the deck of playing cards.

e + 1 = 0

In the Euler’s Identity Alice is the constant 1. As seen earlier her place in the equation makes the pother and the strange procedure of the trial of the Knave of Hearts as zero another constant!

The beauty of the Euler’s theorem is that it has a transcendental quality of human existence where a person or an event (represented by the number 1) can undo all the carefully orchestrated Power Games of nations to mean nothing. Even while Austro-Hungarian monarchy or Dual Monarchy was lording over the ethnic minorities of the Balkans little did it realize a single event like assassination of the Archduke of Austria (1914) would bring down the empire like a pack of cards!

Similarly all that the Great Britain had amassed as a maritime nation, with colonies stretched into far corners of the globe (The Sun will never set on their empire’) shall with two Great Wars evaporate.(the constant 1 can represent both Great Wars as one set)

1.Man who simplifies life has plenty to spare for best things in life.  Man who lives on hire has all the vices of others to bear.

2. A young man who could only afford public transport happily did his stint; and now as talking head of a big Corporation he is chauffeur driven. He hates it. His public image is so altered and airbrushed whenever he looks in the morning at the mirror what he sees disgusts him.

3. This fable is very familiar and let me just the same tell to drive home a point:’ The country mouse lived merrily on offal; town mouse on caviar and blue cheese but the cat in the corporate hierarchy was a terrible taskmaster. Whichever way he looked could not rise in that corporate ladder without licking his boots.

Is corporate life all that bad? Now that I am past that stage of hard labor or looking forward for a hike in my wages, I ought to be careful in making any sweeping assertions. Some can handle corporate decision-making and work cheek by jowl with coworkers and try to see their ideas put into effect, and make a decent living. Are you really happy selling things you would not sell to your children or to loved ones? Are you happy playing toady to your boss who is merely looking after his back and shall sell you at the first opportunity to save his own skin? Would you be better off if you did some soul searching to ask,’Is this all I can do?’ If making life simpler is what you aim at, go into business yourself. And when it really takes off you shall start all over again worrying over matters seemingly trivial to others, Your biggest headache shall be that your sweat and blood do not fall to the ground in vain. Perhaps you shall require medication to keep your spirits up or to make through the day and night. The bottom line is keep your investment from failing and keep all aspects of you creature  under your control. It shall take every ounce of your effort but then it is your own brain child. At least  when all said and dome you hall have the satisfaction you gave your best shot at it.

Man is the biggest entrepreneur with chain of factories that are solely devoted to produce energy. Each cell is one. Our cells are factories where food with molecular oxygen is combined in order to extract energy in convenient package.

These factories mitochondria were some billions of years ago free organisms evolved into one giant conglomerate that explains our physiology.

Why should two companies merge but for perceived benefits than competing one another? Benefits must have far outweighed inconveniences.

When multicellular organisms arrived this merger continued to function so we are not a single body but a collection of specialized divisions.

Man is in short a factory of trillions of companies with diversified portfolio each set to do under a single management. This is a natural order.

In any world where life is to be enriched there must exist factors conducive for choices. Each individual senses its own multiplicity of needs and can relate the outside forces to which it can respond in an independent manner than others.

Individualism against robotic mentality.

Let me quote a media savant: ‘In Silicon Valley, the point of a venture is to add incremental value to an existing large technological infrastructure.  In the Silicon Valley world, people say things like “Is the market ready for this?” and “Who is your customer?”  In other words they’re focusing on the constraints being provided by existing technological understanding in the market, and if they can fit inside that, investors will keep quiet.  The work involves completing quantitative feature lists on a schedule”.(ack: Rene Amador/Quora)

But put all the nerds or the brightest minds in one box and their problem solving abilities will soon show its achilles heel. Their entrepreneurial skills have become ossified by being removed from the natural order of organization. You need to consider the number of great may corporations all geared to work as if so many cars out of an assembly line. These names may have held their position for a while but have lost out in the march of time. Detroit or the Motor City has itself came bankrupt, a fitting metaphor.

Life is much more than mind of man and profits and figures that represent things, collectively let us say money. (to be continued)

If we were to take our lives in a linear fashion, last week of 2014 and first two weeks of this year would represent for me a life-changing experience. During Christmas holidays it struck me to set to write songs using Psalms of David as the text. I set myself the task: the first fifty psalms.

I never had to look back and it came flowing as though it all had been arranging itself in the back of my mind all these years since I began reading the Bible myself. I began on 26th Dec. and completed Psalm #50 on 10 January. Average about 4 psalms could not have been as a result of my own conscious effort. God anointed me with a fresh creative spirit, which is the office of Holy Spirit.

Soon after putting Omar Khayyam into print I had planned to shift gears from my regular blogging on account of my failing eyesight and age. I wanted to go back to my love of study of the Scriptures which with the Psalms of David has come back in full flow. I had in the 80s written hymns for a Pentecostal group in my mother tongue and this time I wanted it as an aid for personal worship.

In a nutshell I have paid my dues to the world in going through some 70 years the accumulated wisdom of its wisemen, sceptics, ungodly and godly and I could loosen myself without being overawed. I tested as a rationalist and in many modes and I am still spiritually intact to worship my Lord.

Every day is a slice of life lived and whichever choices you make life experience peculiar to your decision shall be on hand. This is the lesson I found true in my case.

Which is most desirable in life? Ability to make changes of course. Each of us has a part to play and in order to face the challenges ahead education is a medium.

Think of your life as a point hurtling through time and place along with so many billions of points each making for a goal. Each one carries certain measure of knowledge which we share unequally as we progress in life. So quality of what we know and seek becomes vital for our progression.

ii

Time and Place

No one can make changes with all facts on hand; nor can actions matter if time for them is past. If you have rested on what you learned yesterday, you shall have lot of catching to do.

If you mess up the time element changes you make shall never be your servant but master. It shall sweep you away and to your cost.

Each of us can be effective and master our own life in knowing the time and having essential facts to make changes as we go ahead. In a small town growing up means learning from traditions, from your peers and from internet quality of which shall be different from a big city being thrown among people, and variety of them, so much so there is a vibrancy and here and now quality to information you gather. Is being street smart what life is all about? No it is not. Learning from people and books cannot help much if your mind is not tidied up and is undisciplined to compare impressions you are daily bombarded with.

iii

What good is educating ourselves beyond what we can get maximum benefit? Education from life as we go along is as important as equipping mind.

Education can only begin when mind can see limit of the printed word and in setting life no boundaries where your mind is strong enough to face challenges it brings up.

Everything you have been told as true is not tested true. Time and place shall show you quite something else and it is from an objective mind you need to make your conclusions.

Importance of life is therefore to test the events that you face and make the changes so you are benefited as well as made difference for others around you.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.

It is the source of all true art and science.” ~ Albert Einstein

What greater mystery can we plumb than that of life? Is there any purpose or direction for which we have been programmed beforehand?

Life is a precious gift and every man and woman has the same gift to be used and it must make sense to our rational mind. So that window of opportunity to make yourself useful to you and others around you is narrow. Between birth and death is it not wisdom if you can throw light on or connect in some way to the mystery with the key you have? If we have been endowed with fine faculties to know ourselves why do we leave it to others? Do we make sense or make sense of what others tell as truth? Of what worth is the lamp of life it it were to be shown under the direction of others than to lead our own path? These are the questions I have covered in the Illustrated Omar Khayyam.
