That’s life (that’s life) that’s what mama say
She’s saying what is not true-
May be for her
In her time but sure not for me:
When I’m young I know this life is all that
I have, that’s life (that’s life) and mama spent it all:
Some people get their kicks
Stompin’ on a dream
But I don’t mind what mama did with her dream.
‘Cause this fine old world of her is rockin’ chair now
I’ve been a crawler, a moppet, a drooler
A kiddo, a bloke and a jerk
I’ve been up and down and over and out
But I know one thing
Each time I find my feet I know life is out there
I pick myself up and get back for some more-
That’s life (that’s life) I tell ya, I can’t deny it
I thought of quitting, mama
But my heart just ain’t up to follow
And being old is when I have nothing more to do.

Oh the shark has fancy moves dear
And he makes it deadly clear
When a jack knife has his fin sliced
He knows it is end of the road.

When that fin drops in some soup bowl
Jolly time it is, some big deal!
Mighty beast of the deep scalped
For his bauble and left for dead!

original version

Oh, the shark has pretty teeth dear
And he shows ’em, pearly white
Just a jack knife has Macheath dear
And he keeps it way out of sight

When that shark bites with his teeth, dear
Scarlet billows begin to spread
Fancy gloves though has Macheath dear
So there’s never, never a trace of red

On the sidewalk, one Sunday morning
Lies a body, oozin’ life
Someone’s sneaking ’round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the knife

From a tugboat, on the river going slow
A cement bag is dropping on down
You know that cement is for the weight dear
You can make a large bet Mackie’s back in town
