God presented Saul as the king of Israel which was already in the divine Will. This we can understand from God’s commandment to Moses,” When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, …and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;/ Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee(De.17:14-15): The only difference was the manner all Israel required a king to lead them like other nations while God willed the Servant-King whom He sent in the fulness of time born of a woman. Like the prophet of whom we have already touched uponDe.18:18-19) he was to be ‘one from among thy brethren’. St John however informs,” He came unto his own, and his own received him…

Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord of all the righteous acts of the Lord, which he did to you and to your fathers.” Here we have Samuel presenting a progress report of his lifelong testimony as the judge over Israel. He witnesses his integrity before God and man. In choosing Saul as their king he would anoint him in order to present commit the will of God, “Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?(10:1). He proved indeed he met the test laid on him in the battle against Nahash the king of Amorites. Samuel consecrated him second time in Gilgal which served as God did choose their king. Samuel on the other hand was consecrated before God while he was yet in mother’s womb. Hence he publicly testifies,”Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before…

Saul is tested and he proves to be a leader of men. Samuel consecrates him as the chosen king of Israel.

v.1 “Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.” Condition laid by Nahash was humiliating putting out one eye made them useless as men of war. In a man to man fight one held the shield on the left hand which meant his left eye was shielded and thrusting the weapon with his right hand blindly was useless.

Theyasked for 7 day time to answer the king.

In between we shall acquaint with places mentioned in the Bible.

Jabeshgilead:

a town on the east of Jordan, on the top of one of the green hills of Gilead, within the limits of the half tribe of Manasseh, and in…

“And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them./ And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets? And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.”

Saul is not primarily known as a prophet but the Spirit is sketching out the man in direct context of the Son is continuing with the sub-text where places and men are meant to create a holy family…

In this chapter the Spirit delineates the king whom Israel had chosen. Here we have damage control by God who relents knowing well that their heart was never right before him. We shall see the one chosen would be a double for his Son and it is brought to our understanding in many ways which we shall consider in this post. God is long suffering so He is giving them a king who is set in the mold of his Son and Saul shall save them from their immediate concern. God says, ‘That he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me(9:16b).”

In v.2 two witnesses who speak to Saul have one theme: ‘What shall I do for my son?”It is a cue for us to keep in mind Saul as the deliverer…

Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

in this passage the Holy Spirit instructs us what quality God desires in whosoever to be captain over his inheritance. He has to be turned into another man. In order to prepare Saul for this new designated role we see Samuel consecrating him with a vial of oil. He also predicts what awaits him on his way the numbers are as important as the objects themselves. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned(1 Co.2:14). Two loaves of bread offered by three men going uto God to Bethel carry the symbolism of Trinity. The two loaves of bread…

v.2 “And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost”. He said to his son, “Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.”Saul belonged to the tribe of Benjamin and he set out to recover them. He was persistent and did not mind the chase that took them far and wide mentioned in vv.4-5, but his concern for his father was equally evident that he told his servants, “Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.”. He was considerate.

Hearing that a seer was in residence in the vicinity he would seek him out. God had foreseen who should be the future king of Israel and arranges the meeting accordingly. “To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be…

Overview:

As immortal God when Moses askedfor his name his answer was ‘I AM WHO I AM (Ex.3:14). Qualities that make up His holiness shall never suffer injury. It does not change when the Spirit qualifies Him as the Father of lights ; God the Son similarly does not change and when he came to the world he was the true Light.,”If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.(2 Ti.2:13)”

Israel approached Samuel and their demand was for a king to lead them in all matters. “That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles(8:20)”. God tells him to hearken unto their demands because He had proved them and found their heart was never right. He also assured him that it was no reflection on his performance as their judge…

God tells Samuel to do as the people wanted with a caveat, -‘howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them’ and it comes as an indictment to what their shallow observances of the Law of Moses had brought upon them. Thus in v.18 “And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”

One of the saddest lines follow it. “Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel.” We know their history and what befell them as a nation in AD. 71. When they rejected the Prince of peace ,(“But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.-John 19:15) and chose Barabbas instead. This act was a validation of their heart where fear…

And theLordsaid unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

9Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.

Here we have God assuring Samuel that Israel in wanting a king over them they want a change of government. They wanted a king as unstable as they were since the…
