Winston Churchill as a colonial secretary tried to appoint a friend of his to a colonial post. The colonial Service lay on the personal prerogative of the Secretary of State who was advised by one of his private secretaries.
Major(later Sir) Ralph Frost looked at the man and decided that he was unsuitable and told Churchill so. Churchill grumbled,”What is the use of my being Secretary of State if I can’t give a job to a friend?”
His principal private secretary Edward Marsh who was present chimed, ”You should choose your friends better, Winston.” It shut up the great man.
