The superscription refers to “For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; ” The word of God is eternal. “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.This passage we shall set against the pure words of God purified seven times.”(Ps.12:6). What did Jesus say,” Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”(Matt.24:35). Having said this the new heaven is new more than the new earth indicates for a natural man. Nicodemus for his life experience and position as an elder could not crack it since he was trying with his carnal wisdom. Jesus explained a life of the Spirit. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”(John 3:6). “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea./ And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”

As with other visions mentioned in this book we need remember that he was in the Spirit so what he records is verbatim through the eyes of the Holy Spirit as it were. “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day”(1:10). So John still in his world of the flesh records the bride not as made up spiritual bodies but in terms of Jerusalem as existing. The body of Christ is spiritual Jerusalem with an adjective ‘new’. This New Jerusalem descends from heaven. By the same token in v. 26 we read,”And they shall bring the glory…

The crux of this chapter is this:”And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”(He.9:27)

And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand./ And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,/ And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”(vv.1-3)
